4 Ways Introverts And Extroverts Can Work Together!


Introverts and extroverts are like poles apart. This is a particularly serious concern within a workplace where all kinds of people have to coexist and work together. Introverts don’t like to socialize and prefer their own company. On the other hand, extroverts are the opposite as they like interacting with people and want their family and friends around their life.


Similarly, both the personality types have their own different goals and definitions of a happy life. So what happens when these two types work together in an office?


Luckily, there are several ways that can help both of these different personality types of work as a team. Here they are:


1. Respect The Space Of Each Other

Space is of the essence when it comes to both introverts and extroverts. They just view it differently. Introverts guard their space like a precious commodity and find it very uncomfortable when someone ‘forces’ their way in. on the other hand, extroverts treat their space as everyone else’s. These habits could either hinder a project’s progress or help it along. A workplace hence needs to create a space friendly to both introverts and extroverts.


Both personality types need to respect each other’s space as much as possible. Extroverts should own their space, and introverts should be able to give a little.  Once both see that the other respects their choices, it would be much easier to collaborate. Speaking of which…


2. Collaborate and Communicate With Each Other 

Contrary to what most people think, individuals are rarely complete extroverts or introverts. They may have preferences in certain situations, but as one grows older and wiser, they learn to adapt.


Hence, people working on a project together should take time out and get to know each other. Collaborative meetings, both personal and professional, are recommended for team members. This is so they can understand the boundaries of other people and know their own limits. Finding common ground, similar interests, etc, would result in a general sense of well-being and camaraderie. This would hopefully lead to a smooth running of the work process.


Additionally, all the team members need to express and communicate their needs and concerns. If something is important to either an introvert or extrovert, they should have a safe platform to voice these needs.


3. Learn to Compromise

It may seem harsh, but it has to be said. We are becoming all too spoiled in this modern day and age. We want climate-controlled buildings and residences, instant entertainment, and the freedom to speak out or remain in our shell. While technology has given us many modern luxuries, it may also have paved the way for us to remain oblivious to other people’s needs.


Hence, coworkers and team members should learn to function even if they’re out of their comfort zone. Not only this, but they should try and work with what they have, instead of complaining about it. If an introvert is pushed to speak out in front of people, they should definitely try to do so. If an extrovert doesn’t have all of his ideas applauded and met with the same excitement as his own, he should learn to take criticism and work on his brainstorming a little more.


4. Combine Abilities 

An extroverted individual is more likely to jump up and voice his opinion, a new idea, or a complaint. An introvert, while not confident enough to vocalize it, would be more able to sift through a thought process and perfect it. The abilities of both personalities are valuable in their own way. When combined, these skills can end up creating an output beyond anything that one personality type can create on their own.


Once both kinds of personalities overcome their differences and clashes, the extrovert-introvert combo is actually quite logical. Every team needs a go-getter just like they also need a rational and logical thinker. One might even go so far as to say that it’s more of an advantage than a problem to have people with both character traits on a work team.

The differences between an introvert and extrovert are not binary or black and white. There is a whole personality spectrum, and individuals may fall on any part of it. Nevertheless, any workplace would be a melting pot of diverse personalities, if not different cultures and family backgrounds. The real meaning of growing into a responsible adult is to deal with your problems instead of expecting others to accept them.


At the end of the day, some people like to talk things out, while others prefer to evaluate and think by themselves. Both are essential parts of an efficient workforce. If they can be brought in to work together, this just may be the best thing for both of them.


In this manner, introverts could be coaxed out of their shell to shine a little more. Extroverts could also learn from the skills of their introverted counterparts.
